  • Essay / The Food and Drug Administration by Upton Sinclair...

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair was about Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant from Lithuania who came to the United States to discover his dreams, hopes, and desires. He took his family to Chicago to start a new life. He worked in meatpacking industries that were unsanitary and where brutal hours resulted in starvation. He was mistreated and realized that the American dream was not as easy as it seemed. The book deals with disease, hunger, corruption, crime, poverty and death. “Leave it to me; let me do it. I will make more money – I will work harder. This was said frequently by Jurgis because he and Ona always struggled with money and work, but Jurgis never wanted Ona to dwell on these issues. Jurgis always took charge when it came to serious decisions because he knew he was the right man and he had to stand his ground. Throughout the book, Jurgis always tells Ona that he will work harder, even though he cannot physically work anymore because his body is too tired. “Finally, it was thanks to a newspaper that he found a job, after almost a month of searching.” This shows the true difficulty of being an immigrant and not having experience finding a job. Jurgis had many jobs in Chicago and not all of them were easy to get, he had to fight for a place. The majority of the book took place in Chicago in 1906. While reading The Jungle, I saw from start to finish the struggle that an immigrant family went through and realized that being in the real world is much more difficult, especially if you don't have an education. . The Jungle is an American classic because of the role it played within the Food and Drug Administration and made a difference for all workers who worked in the meat processing industry. Throughout the book, the author illustrates the...... middle of paper ......e. I would recommend this book to others for learning purposes as it is entertainingly written but also teaches you what the slaughterhouses were like. After all the hard work Jurgis did in Chicago, he finally made a difference with the slaughterhouse rules. If Jurgis had not stood up and said something, this would not have changed and the workers and animals would have continued to be mistreated. My final impression of the book was positive because the fact that a change was brought about through this book and many people benefited from it makes me happy. Immigrants already have a pretty difficult time getting to the United States and should not be mistreated where they work. Overall, The Jungle was a great book to read and gave me the real-life perspective of an immigrant working hard to achieve that American dream..
