  • Essay / No More Guns - 965

Gun control is an effort to end violent crime by strengthening gun ownership laws. Under our Second Amendment, people have the right to “keep and bear arms.” But the Supreme Court has recognized exceptions to Second Amendment freedoms, as well as the fact that no right is absolute. Americans have long debated laws that would allow professors or students to carry firearms on college campuses. Do gun control laws on American college campuses reduce violence, or do they take guns away from law-abiding citizens while leaving them in the hands of criminals? According to Villahermosa, “allowing guns on campus will create problems instead of solving them.” (“Guns do not belong to administrators, teachers, or students” para. 1) I completely agree with Villahermosa’s point of view and believe that guns cause violence. Overall, gun-related crimes on college campuses are a major problem in the United States today. Other experts disagree with Villahermosa's view. For example, in an article written by Timothy Wheeler titled “There's A Reason They Choose Schools,” the author clearly demonstrates the “success of armed first responders.” (“There's a Reason They Choose Schools” para. 5) According to Wheeler, schools and colleges are targets of mass shootings because of their gun-free zone policies. Overall, this is what makes universities vulnerable to mass shootings. Based on my research, this report assesses whether the potential risk of injury and death resulting from the latest mass shootings on American college campuses should increase public interest, and whether new bills in favor of arming teachers or students should be created. This report covers topics such as: What we know about violence...... middle of paper ......s about the human brain. We must ensure the safety of our students and faculty by keeping colleges gun-free.
