  • Essay / Macbeth, a woman ahead of her time - 952

Macbeth, a woman ahead of her timeIn the Elizabethan era, a woman had no say in the relationship with her husband, but Macbeth did Shakespeare changes this accepted theory. Lady Macbeth is a woman ahead of her time; she is caught between the ambitious, powerful woman of today and the fragile, helpless creature of the Elizabethan era. At the start of this tragedy, she is vicious, overly ambitious, without a conscience, and willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants. As Macbeth becomes less dependent on his wife, Lady Macbeth loses control over her husband, but more importantly over herself. She is so absorbed in the greedy world created by Shakespeare that she fails to consider the consequences of her actions more realistically. Lady Macbeth lives as if she were a woman ahead of her time, but she dies as if she came from “the golden age of drama.” Initially, Lady Macbeth is presented as a dominant, controlling, and heartless wife with ambitions of achieving royalty for her husband. These words characterize the woman of today. She does not let her husband rule her life, but a modern woman seeks the best for herself and her husband. This weak, uncertain and unstable state of Lady Macbeth, which is only revealed towards the end of the play, exhibits the characteristics of a woman of the Elizabethan era. However, the audience begins to see hints of this hidden nature in the way Macbeth addresses her. The first time Lady Macbeth appears on stage, she reads Macbeth's letter, which shows her desire to become Queen of Scots. Lady Macbeth reads: “I have seen fit to deliver thee, my dearest partner in greatness; so that you do not lose the right to rejoice, ignoring what greatness is promised to you” (I.5.10-13). This part of her husband's letter shows that she trained him to report important events that occur while she is away. At that point, she decides that quick action will be the basis of her reasoning and planning. His impulsive orders will affect Macbeth so profoundly that his character will be changed forever. Lady Macbeth intentionally attempts to ignore the consequences and focuses on securing Macbeth's future as King of Scotland. She sees the quickest path as one that may lack rationality, but shortens the path to the throne..
