Essay / Traits of Love: The Great Gatsby Issue Paper
“The beginning of love is the willingness to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolve not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we love not what they are, but only their potential resemblance to ourselves, then we do not love them: we love only the reflection of ourselves which we find in them” – Thomas Merton , No Man Is an Island. you fall in love with someone, do you actually fall in love with that person, or do you fall in love with the person's idea of how beautiful or "sexy" they are, how cool or big their house is, how beautiful his car is “Sometimes in society people don't fall in love with someone, but more people fall in love with the idea of that person or being with that person. Love is misinterpreted, explained, defined in different ways, there are both positive and negative sides to love. This theme is further emphasized by the main character of The Great Gatsby, the famous, rich and beautiful Jaya Gatsby who is supposedly in love with Daisy or is it Daisy's idea? In this article, I will explain my reasoning and give specific examples. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby tries to get closer to Daisy and be with her. At this point, Jay tries to convince Nick to invite Daisy over for tea at Gatsby's house. Gatsby continues to try to be with or near Daisy no matter what it takes. Gatsby dreams or flashbacks to when he and Daisy were together and keeps thinking about what she was like. P. 148-14...... middle of paper ...... a lot to learn in his life and wants people to think he is an intelligent man when in the end he is not is not. You can conclude after reading this paper how sometimes in society people don't fall in love with someone but more fall in love with the idea of that person or being with that person, Jay Gatsby is someone 'one that fits very well into this theme. Jay doesn't know what true love is and what it really means to fall in love with someone. Not just for what they have, but also for who they are inside. I think you will find this behavior in the younger generation of teenagers or young adults, because they do not yet understand the true meaning of love. For future preference, when looking for someone to love, make sure you actually love them, otherwise you might end up empty-handed and loveless. Don't end up like Jay Gatsby.
