Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born to Italian immigrants on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His father, Mario José Bergoglio, was a railway worker in Italy, while his mother Regina Maria Sivori was a housewife. After graduating from high school, he went to the University of Buenos Aires where he earned his master's degree in chemistry.
