Internal displacement is a problem affecting regions around the world. Countries ravaged by civil wars, government oppression, human rights violations, or other internal conflicts produce the mass movement of people (called internally displaced persons) to other parts of the country in search of refuge ( Knox and Marston, 108-109, 2010). In the context of Colombia, this article will first explore the economic challenges that displaced people face and discuss how these challenges affect displaced women. It will then discuss the impact of the gendered division of labor within the household on these geographic areas of movement. Finally, it will examine the link between the urban environment and changing gender dynamics in the context of internal displacement. Colombia provides a good case study from which to examine the issue of internal displacement, as Latin America is the region in the world with the second most serious internally displaced persons situation.
