Divorce is a significant and growing problem that influences the social and academic development of children. It has been proven to be one of the most traumatic events that can occur in a child's life (Beverly, Molloy, Hart, Ginsberg, & Mulvey, 2007). Support groups have been found to have a positive effect on students by helping them deal with the situation constructively and reducing their focus on their academic performance and positive peer relationships (Beverly et al, 2007). Corey, Corey, and Corey (2014) point out that the first step in planning a group is to formulate a proposal. The purpose of this article is to present this proposal for implementing a divorce support group in a specific school setting. School Guidance Counseling Group: When Parents Divorce A significant portion of children in the United States are affected by divorce. Empirical investigations confirm that children of divorce are at increased risk of developing psychological, social, behavioral, and academic problems (Amato, 2000; Amato, 2001). Amato and Keith (1991) studied the well-being of children of divorce compared to that of children whose parents were still married. Children from divorced families performed significantly lower across a range of outcomes and it has been shown that these problems can persist into adulthood. Given the high rate of divorce and the negative effects it has on our youth, implementing effective prevention programs is of great importance (Wolchik, West, Sandler, Tein, Coatsworth, & Lengua, 2000). This will serve to bring closure to the group while obtaining an evaluation from the student's perspective. Discussion around this topic will include an invitation for the student to complete the sentence “One way I have grown since divorce is…” and will also highlight the most important thing they learned from participating in the group . We will also review the topics covered and techniques learned so that I can do an assessment of knowledge and growth. As a culminating activity, I would ask students to draw a picture to symbolize how they have grown in their ability to cope with divorce or take better care of their physical, mental, or emotional well-being. At the end of the group, students will share their photos with the group and also discuss ways to seek outside help..
