Essay / Important Discoveries in Physics - 2335
Ideas in physics are never absolute; This is a constantly evolving topic. We think we've discovered everything there is to know about this subject, and then we discover something new that changes everything. This is one of the reasons why physics is so interesting to study: there will always be something new. There are many very important discoveries in physics. This article will describe some of the findings. These discoveries are prevalent throughout history and in our daily lives. One of the oldest, but nevertheless important discoveries in physics is the law of falling bodies. Discovered by Galileo Galilei, it still remains a fundamental element of physics today. It states that all falling objects, regardless of their mass, height, or any other determinant, will remain at a constant acceleration (only ignoring air resistance). This is important because it allows a person to always know the acceleration when determining an unknown about a moving object, for example when determining speed. The law of falling bodies was also very important at the time of its discovery because it disproved Aristotle, which everyone had believed to be true for almost 2000 years. Aristotle said that an object with a greater mass would fall faster than an object with a lesser mass, which is not true. In the 1600s, Sir Isaac Newton concluded that "all objects in the universe that have mass exert a gravitational attraction on each other." ยป Primarily, this means that an object that has mass has a gravitational force between said object and all other objects in the universe. This explains how we humans remain standing on earth and not floating in the air. The earth has mass and each person has mass. Therefore, there is a force between each...... middle of paper....../NumRel/GenRelativity.html>.Jupiter Scientific, "A Century of Physics", 1999.
