  • Essay / Summary of Robert Merton's Mid-Range Theory - 1046

He felt that it needed revision so that he could determine empirical tests that could produce more accuracy within a society . With these changes, the chances of measurability improved and, therefore, functionalism could be tested within a society. As a result, Merton designed the paradigm of functional analysis. He was direct in his proposal to focus only on groups, organizations, societies and cultures. He wanted more order and patterns applied to anything that could be subjected to structural-functional analysis. The adaptation factor of functionalism has been explained as being necessary for the cohesion of a society. His goal was to avoid individual motivations. He spoke of non-functions as irrelevant to social construction. Just like a cancerous tumor would be to the human body, these elements would only cause dissension and decay of society as a whole and should therefore be eliminated (or removed). Another example would be a charity that only promised to cure chicken pox. This would be unnecessary in today's society due to vaccines that prevent this disease. Even though the organization would not be considered harmful, it would not be considered helpful.
