  • Essay / Analysis of Seodaemun Prison - 1421

For example, “In many prison museums (Alcatraz, Argentina and Hong Kong), staff uniforms from different historical periods are on display, providing tourists with a “walk through time” from which they can recognize themes of progress and professionalism” (Welch 2015 p. 38-39). Professionalism in prisons contributes to the theme of panopticism because, although guards are uniformly dressed, it creates an authority figure similar to that of an all-knowing deity. The all-knowing deity described here must represent the prisoner's burden of eternity. When you are in these prison museums, you can feel, see and interact with how the prisoners lived in these horrific environments. Most of them represent hell on Earth by creating strange spaces, harsh conditions and controlled life. The repetition of prisons creates an effect similar to eternity because everything is the same. Prisoners feel this way about prisons and want to escape, but most can't, which is a huge problem.
