  • Essay / Online Learning for Teachers and Students - 743

Using technologies such as the web to create a rich learning environment may not be as simple as it seems. As we try to instill lifelong learning in our students, we as teachers must remember that trying new technologies may also require some learning on the part of teachers. The research shows the two aspects of web-based learning, resources to facilitate online learning and ways to develop educational software for online learning, which teachers may need to discover in order to use web-based learning effectively. A study conducted in Taiwan has challenged traditional ideas. of education where only teachers teach and only students learn. In this study, researchers found that not only can teachers teach on the web, but any user can share information with other users, just like a teacher. The results of this study revealed that people who teach excellently on the Web are not necessarily credentialed teachers (Chan, 2002). Sometimes netizens teach others and learn from others. This study also found that online teaching differs significantly from classroom teaching. Some issues discussed were quality control and standards of learning environments and the fact that not all educational outcomes can be achieved through Internet learning (Chan, 2002). The researchers also highlighted a range of challenges encountered when teaching over the Internet and the characteristics of online teachers. Some characteristics include, the most obvious, comfort with using the computer and the Internet, as well as enjoyment of sharing ideas and thoughts with other people, motivation and self-discipline. The most surprising feature is that most of them are students of the physical world, about eight out of fifteen (Chan, 2002). The main point emerging from the study in the middle of the article......n with their students on new technologies, not only are our students lifelong learners, but they and we must be lifelong teachers. At some point, teachers may need to allow their students to teach them a thing or two because they might know more in a technology area than their teacher.
