  • Essay / School is bad for children - 1728

Knowledge and education are two great words on which all schools, colleges and universities in the world are built. How can we measure these two qualities that these institutions promise to develop in children? We all know full well that each human brain works differently from another, how can two people be judged on a series of the same questions asked as tests of these intuitions? Personally, I find no use in the current education system that I experienced in my school in India. There are many arguments made by both sides of this discussion, namely benefits and losses, but there is no sure way to understand them. Because every argument sounds so compelling that when you hear it, you are drawn to it. John Holt, the author of “School is bad for children”, would join the criticisms made by David Barthelme, the author of “The School”, concerning the courses put in place by administrations, which are neither beneficial nor relevant to the school. growth and development of children to survive in a dynamic and rapidly changing outside world. Holt would agree with Mr. Barthelme's criticism of the stupidity of school authorities. Mr. Barthelme in his short story describes the stupidities committed by the school authorities, each year with the example of tropical fish. He describes: “Of course we expected the death of tropical fish, it was not a surprise. These numbers, you look at them sideways and they are on the surface. But the lesson plan at that time provided for a supply of tropical fish, there was nothing we could do, it happens every year, we just have to hurry” (1). Apparently, Mr. Barthelme, from the point of view of a school teacher, denounces the program developed by the school ...... middle of paper ...... can help the education systems. Institutions should at least take these suggestions into consideration and work on them to create better schools and colleges for the future generation of students. Mr. Holt gives suggestions such as ending compulsory attendance policies, removing children from the prison walls of school and exposing them to the real world outside. John Holt, through his article "School is bad for children", and Donald Barthelme, through his short story "The School", attempt to convince readers of the shortcomings of the current education system. They take care of children and want the future generation to be educated and to possess their qualities of curiosity, their intelligence, their go-getter spirit. And wanting to change the current system that forces them to be afraid and forget these qualities, making them lazy and self-deceiving..
