Watching a movie based on a book and reading the book may or may not be quite a similar experience. SE Hinton's The Outsiders was published sixteen years before Francis Ford Coppola turned the book into a film. After reading the book and watching the movie, there are obvious similarities and differences between the two as the characters, plot, and details are compared. Cherry and Marcia are both Socs. Hinton describes them as “…tuff looking girls – well dressed and really beautiful. They looked like they were sixteen or seventeen years old. One had short black hair and the other had long red hair. In the movie, their characters were well chosen because they match the description in the book. Watching them in the film, it was easy to identify them without knowing their names. Bob, another Soc, is described by Hinton as a drunk who is always looking for a fight, wears large rings known as brass knuckles, and has enormous eyes. He is depicted the same way in the film.
