Essay / Book Review of Half of a Yellow Sun - 1928
The culture and general nature of their society changes through three stages: pre-war, war, and post-war. The British formed Nigeria, bringing together various ethnic groups, leaving governing power to northern Nigeria (the Hausa) in their efforts to exploit and rule from a distance. The resulting tensions between the Hausa and the Igbo were certainly causal factors in the war. The multiple points of view presented through the eyes of the three main characters: Ugwu, Odenigbo and Olanna, demonstrated to me the different levels of impact that the war had on the people of Biafra. The pace of cultural change and shift in social identity among the Igbo between before and after the Biafran War is most certainly evident through character development during the Biafran War.
