Essay / Theme of Loyalty in The Hobbit - 1103
An important example of this is when the elf king Thranduil captures Thorin and company in Mirkwood, and Bilbo must save them by sneaking out with his ring. The capture of his friends likely leads Bilbo to dislike Thranduil and view him as an unreliable person. However, Bilbo ends up trying to help the Elf King by giving him the Arkenstone during the battle and eventually gives him a gift after the war is over, causing Thranduil to make Bilbo an "elf friend and blessed" (353). Thranduil also disliked Thorin, because he thought that "'[he] and [his] people tried three times to attack [his] people during their revelry'" (208), as well as because He thought he was rude and untrustworthy. However, when Thorin died, the Elf King "deposed Orcrist... who had been taken from Thorin into captivity" (349), showing a sign of friendship and respect, overriding the feud the two individuals had at the era.
