  • Essay / The main problems occurring in 21st century society in the film Sing Street

This film tells the story of a small Dublin love story between Conor and Raphina, a teenage schoolboy and a teenage girl lost in a country that has nothing to offer them. Conor comes from a family that is serving a crumbling marriage and was sent to the Christian Brother School in Synge Street where he was bullied in a difficult and turbulent school after his father clashed a brick wall in family income. One day he saw this beautiful girl outside his school and tried to get her number, but he lied about having a band and he needed her for the music video in order to get his number. This began a quest to find people to form a group that would eventually be called “Sing Street”. With the influence of Conor's big brother making a name for himself in popular music, Conor decided to create music and music videos based on Raphina with his guys to simply impress Raphina and fight for Raphina's love . Over time, the song influences them in pop culture and allows them to find their true identity. The group finally performed for the first time to an exceptional reception. Conor and Raphina took a leap of faith to follow their dreams and decided to leave the country for Britain and leave everything behind together. Say no to plagiarism. Most Singaporeans, myself included, are too focused on a bright future for ourselves and have forgotten our real dreams, like Conor's sister Ann Lawlor. Her sister loves painting and drawing but stopped because she studied law to have a better future. Like her, we are afraid of not having a good income to support ourselves in the future and forget to further pursue the artistic and sporting dreams which can be reflected by Conor's brother Brendon Lawlor who planned to achieve his dreamed of being an artist but I didn't do anything and now without a job. In today's society, the word "dream" that comes true among students is to have a job with a well-paid salary. But for those who have more artistic and sporting dreams, their development in this field is lacking because of the school and the government which does not really support them with better resources, which pushes students to change their dream for " typical “dream jobs” that result. the vast majority of Singaporeans are unhappy with their jobs. Indeed, Singapore is developing and everything is becoming more and more expensive, which forces future generations to risk everything to pursue their artistic or sporting dreams and obtain more stable jobs for themselves and their families. Like Conor and Raphina, there are a few people who risk everything and pursue their dreams of being happy even if they don't have a high salary because they know that one day they will achieve it. They do it so they can do something they love for the rest of their lives. The problem occurring in the society can be reflected by the characters in the film. The film is based on the theme of risk which appears a lot in the film. For me, the risk is doing things that lead to or have a high percentage of failure, but it will also lead to happiness, success, or open up an opportunity. Conor choosing to start a group is a risk that he will take without knowing anything, it's like taking an exam with a blindfold on. All this risk opens up opportunity,.”.
