  • Essay / The Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse - 1657

Child sexual abuse is a social crisis of significant proportions (Lipovsky and Hanson, 2007). This type of maltreatment has been shown to be correlated with the development of a wide range of mental health and social problems in children and adults (Kemp, Signal, Botros, Taylor, & Prentice, 2014). Additionally, this type of abuse does not always involve penetration, but also includes inappropriate touching or witnessing sexual acts. Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse experience a range of short- and long-term effects resulting from the exploitation. Additionally, survivors suffer from very low self-esteem and often take responsibility for the abuse. Finally, the effects of childhood sexual abuse include sleep disturbances, codependency, and may continue to be abused by others even after leaving an abusive environment (Lipovsky & Hanson, 2007).
