They would even walk to the lake and try to rinse it off. Everything was different back then so that they could live more easily. Another example would be that of the kitchen; there were no ovens or stoves. To be able to cook anything, they limited themselves to using charcoal to be able to prepare their meals. It's like major transitions from where they come to here and having the technologies and using things as simple as possible.
