America decided to expand outward. However, America was unaware of the many tactics it needed to expand overseas. Because of this lack of knowledge, the United States had to resort to many measures that it had never used before in previous expansion projects. The task was much easier for them than during the expansion of the 1890s, as they first expanded westward. The land they settled in was still a continuous part of their territory, making it easier for the United States to claim it. The expansion of the 1890s involved more complicated acquisitions, including the acquisition of islands with large populations. Another difference is the purpose of the expansion. Previously, America sought to expand for the sole purpose of establishing itself; in contrast, in the 1890s their expansion was not for the same reasons, but rather for their usefulness. For example, naval bases were created; trading outposts and shopping centers were also established. These were colonies, not states added to the original territory.
