People cannot survive alone in this world, so they form relationships. Relationships play an important role in a person's life; it influences and defines each person's character and ideals. It can make someone the happiest person in the world or the unhappiest. In order to establish a stable and lasting relationship, there must be good communication at the base of this bond. The rules of good communication include: listening to each other, understanding each other's emotions and needs, expressing one's point of view honestly, and supporting each other in times of adversity. In Henrick Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, he uses the character development of Nora Helmer, the protagonist, and Torvald Helmer, the antagonist, to emphasize the importance of communication in a healthy relationship. A Doll's House was published in 1879 in Norway. Women of this era were expected to be good mothers and wives. They were expected to handle domestic responsibilities, while men took care of business and dominated the household (Historical Content). Most husbands tended to view their wives' opinions as insignificant. This narrow-minded thinking has led to disrespect and inequality in marriage. Respect, equality, trust, loyalty and above all love create a healthy relationship. These qualities can be acquired through communication. Torvald and Nora's marriage reflects a typical 19th century marriage. Through the relationship between Nora and Torvald, Henrick Ibsen explores the harmful effect of a relationship lacking communication and respect. To construct a building, its basement must be solid; similarly, to build a relationship, communication must be strong. Good communication builds trust and loyalty. Ultimately, the partners will be able to depend on each other. Many relationships, even today, break down because two partners don't want to communicate or spend time together. A relationship must be strong so that the couple can overcome difficulties without struggle or doubt. It is only through communication that a relationship can stand the test of time.
