Essay / Summary of Peter Pan - 958
Peter Pan by JM Barrie tells the story of the Darling children and their new friend, Peter Pan. Peter is an adventurer who frequently visits the window of Mrs. Darling's house to listen to her bedtime stories. One night, he is discovered and loses his shadow while trying to flee the scene. Peter returns trying to get his shadow back and wakes Mrs. Darling's daughter, Wendy, who helps him put it back. To return the favor, he invites her to return to Neverland with him. Wendy accepts and extends the invitation to her brothers, John and Michael. In Neverland, Wendy enthusiastically takes on the role of mother to Peter and his friends, the Lost Boys. However, Neverland is not as perfect as it seems and as the novel progresses, Barrie reveals several conflicts to the reader. One of the main conflicts throughout the novel is that Wendy doesn't know whether she would rather enjoy the childlike innocence of Neverland or return to Neverland. the life that awaits her as a woman in London. Wendy has a certain distaste for adulthood due to the pressure her father puts on her to become a real woman and the fact that her life will have to change, as evidenced in "All the Children, except one, are growing. They'll soon know they're going to grow up, and Wendy knew it that way... That was all that was going on between them about it, but now Wendy knew she had to grow up (page 1). As a result, Wendy's goal at the beginning of the novel is to avoid growing up. Peter Pan gives her the chance to do so, which takes her to Neverland. Ironically, Wendy discovers that living in Neverland brings out her side more mature. Her change comes from Peter and the Lost Boys wanting Wendy to act like their mother because they... middle of paper... are wonderfully designed, making the novel easy to understand in the end. Ultimately, the Darling children end up worried about their parents and a little homesick. They decide it's time to return to London and the Lost Boys, except Peter, want to accompany them. Captain Hook and his henchmen, however, ruin their plans by capturing them and keeping them imprisoned on their ship. Only Peter, with the help of a fairy named Tinker Bell, manages to avoid being captured. point of making the children walk the plank to their doom when Peter arrives and saves them. During his last fight with Captain Hook, Peter pushes him towards the edge of the ship towards the ticking crocodile. Captain Hook falls into the jaws of the waiting crocodiles. The Darling children then return home, with the Lost Boys. Peter stays in Neverland and visits Wendy from time to time..
