According to Sports Science, from the start of the pitch, a softball traveling at 70 miles per hour can reach home plate in as little as 0.35 seconds. When the pitch is cleared, a baseball traveling at 100 miles per hour can reach home plate in 0.38 seconds. The softball hitter must decide whether to hit in as little as 0.025 seconds. The baseball batter must decide in 0.055 seconds whether to swing. Additionally, because the size of a softball field is smaller, the offense gains an advantage. In baseball, since the field size is larger, the defense gains an advantage. As two of the toughest sports, softball and baseball are often misunderstood for each other, even though their similarities make it easy to confuse the sports.
