Essay / Up and Looking Back and After - 1908
Up and Looking Back and After The poems I will analyze and compare are "Remember", "Up-hill" and "Looking Back" by Christina Rossetti and " After” by ThomasHardy. These poems reflect on the theme of loss and how it affects poets when they reflect on it. The poems also show the poets' preoccupation with death. In these poems, the poets address the theme of death using different techniques and linguistic devices. Christina Rossetti is a passionate and powerful poet; the majority of his poetry contains themes of love or death, and in many cases both. Even in the poems she wrote for children, these themes are predominant. Hardy was also very close to nature. In his poem there are vivid descriptions of objects and the element of nature is almost always present. The titles of these poems all give an indication of the subject of the poem. “Remember” tells us that the poet wants us to remember something. A person is often remembered after their death because the pain of loss keeps bringing back memories. In the poem, Rossetti asks her lover to remember her and demands that he "only remember me." “Up-hill” tells us that the poet is probably going on a trip. This journey is the journey of life, which Rossetti questions in his poem. “Looking back” shows us that the poet is thinking about something. Again, one always “looks back” on life when one is close to one’s death to see what one has done and evaluate one’s life. “After” is also a title that could refer to the theme of death. Hardy wants to know what's going to happen. afterwards, when he is dead. He wants to be remembered not for his fame but for his closeness to nature and for the person...... middle of paper ...... on the other hand I will show that the paradise will be - a place of solace after a trip that "takes up a whole long day". “Looking Back” aims to convey that death is a time of evaluation of one’s life. We must look back at “the journey of life” and meditate on the mistakes and difficulties of life. In "Afterwards", Hardy says that death is a time of evaluation by others and that you should be remembered for who you are and not because you are famous or accomplished something. He also hopes he will be remembered for his familiarity with nature and how he “could make do” even though he tried. I think all of the poems convey the theme of loss effectively. All the poems have a different approach but the basic idea is clear: death is inevitable. However, poets have different views on death and its effects on them and their loved ones..
