Essay / Contrasting Views of Early Americans, Thomas Morton and...
There are perhaps no two more contrasting figures in early America than Thomas Morton and John Winthrop. Morton was nicknamed “Misrule Leader” while Winthrop was considered the “model of a perfect earthly ruler” (147). These two characters not only helped settle a new land, but they also knew each other firsthand. These are not two people who lived years apart from each other, but rather simultaneously. With two such polarizing people living in a small, new territory, there was bound to be at least one disagreement. We are fortunate to have the writings of each of these two fascinating men. One can't help but be deeply entertained reading the words each man left behind. Morton was the rebellious and loud one and Winthrop was the conservative preacher. Everyone had different ideas and ideals about what America would become. Their two opinions couldn't have differed much more from each other, but they weren't both entirely right. It seems America has found common ground. Perhaps these two helped pave the way to where we are today. Thomas Morton was not a supporter of the Puritan cause. In fact, he was friends with many “highly placed people” at King Charles’s court who “were all unsympathetic to the Puritans” (138). In his writings he tirelessly strived to incite and ridicule the Puritans. It is clear that he felt a deep disgust for them. It is also clear that he knew the classics very well. He makes many allusions to Greek mythology which provide insight into his training. He didn't hesitate to cheat to get ahead. Before coming to America, one of his business partners was murdered and Morton was a suspect but was never arrested (138). Upon his arrival in America, he quickly aroused the ire of the newspaper industry. Ton was arrested and sent back to England with John Winthrop. Winthrop had no room in his ideal colony for a man like Morton who was only interested in partying and riches. Winthrop wanted men who would live for Christ. Morton wanted to have a good time. These two men were polar opposites and lived very close to each other. While this created tension and conflict between the two, it also made for an interesting time in history for readers today. Each man had extreme opinions about what he wanted in America. Morton wanted a playground while Winthrop wanted a new religious life to live for God. In the end, they were both not fully successful. America has found a middle way, where some people live for God and others for leisure. These people also learned to live together in our wonderful, free country..
