Essay / Rumspringa: Role Conflict in the Amish Youth Community
The Amish culture in general tries to maintain the same traditions, values and language as the original Amish. This individual Indiana Amish subculture, on display in Devil's Playground, shows how culturally diverse society can be. Although the ultimate desire of the Amish is to be a good example of Christ, the community encourages a positive deviance of their adolescents called Runspringa. From the age of sixteen, Amish adolescents have the opportunity to explore the English world to better educate their decision to dedicate their lives to the church and their simple way of life or to leave the community to turn to a life of relative deviance. This contradiction of values often results in role conflicts among young people. Faron is a great example of freedom to experiment gone too far. In addition to her deviant behaviors, including violating a physical stigma by dressing in an English style and wearing earrings and jewelry, smoking, drinking, going out with someone, having a driving license, listening to music and watching television. Faron's daily use and sale of crystal meth is highly illegal, making it a felony. He receives multiple death threats after complying with police deterrence by agreeing to be wired, leading to a search of the home of another Amish dealer. The fact that people wanted to play him off as an external social control led him to return to his parents and get away from drugs since no one wanted his possible drama. Faron also struggled with internal social control. His father, as a preacher, unintentionally influenced his life by instilling religion in his education from a different perspective. He readily admitted that "it's a good religion" and his conscious battle between returning to middle of paper ... in distortion theory. He has a desire to achieve materialistic goals, but leaving home was his alternative and deviant path to achieve this. After feeling he had gotten the most out of the experience of living alone, he returned home to live with his family. He was in no hurry to dedicate himself to the church even though his parents and community played the role of his external social control by constantly asking him when he would join the church. At parties consisting of hundreds of children participating in physical intimacy, smoking, dressing in English, and driving cars to the point of consuming alcohol and illegal drugs, the Devil's Playground was full of deviant behavior and crime . It was interesting to see the different repercussions each character had due to their own deviance and to see what I had learned in class put into a real-life situation..
