They undergo emasculation operation and chant the name of Goddess Bahuchara. It is believed that she cut off her breasts to protect herself from thieves. She is revered by the hijra community. Hijras are both a blessing and a curse and are used at weddings and births. They believe that their “other worldliness” gives them respect in Indian society. It is frowned upon by hijra elders for young hijras to have sexual relations with men. Some hijras even have husbands and perform all marital duties. Some Indian women who will not practice certain sexual things, hijras will indulge in them with other men. Men who have sex with hijras have a wife and family, they all know about her involvement in hijra. Indian society is considered sexually tolerant. In Indian mythology, there have been gods who changed their gender, like Vishnu who transformed into Mohini and became the most beautiful woman in the world, in order to bring back the nectar of the demons. (Nanda, 235) Hijras who struggle internally every day between being a man or a woman are valued in Indian society and tolerated. They adhere to this “third gender” while Western nations are uncomfortable with it.
