Walden by Henry David Thoreau, Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, and Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog all tell the stories of a real-life character who makes the decision to venture outside. in the desert all alone. On the one hand, Chris McCandless (Into The Wild), Timothy Treadwell (Grizzly Man), and Thoreau are similar in many ways. The three men record a sort of documentation of their journey; McCandless and Thoreau keep a diary while Treadwell keeps a video diary. Additionally, all three forced themselves to truly live off the land using only the bare minimum of essentials. On the other hand, men showed several differences. In two of the stories, Into The Wild and Grizzly Man, the main character perishes because of his choice to live this way, while in Walden, Thoreau survives throughout his experience. However, the most striking differences between the characters lay in the reasons why they ventured into the wilderness in the first place. Henry David Thoreau went into the woods “because he wished to live deliberately, to face only the essential facts of life, and to see if he could learn what it had to teach, and no, when [he] would die. , discover that [he] had not lived” (Thoreau, chapter II). His goal was to live his life simply but richly in nature. Chris McCandless went into the woods for a similar but different reason. McCandless was opposed to traditional living. He went into nature to escape society and the traditional way of life. He wanted to prove to himself that he could survive in the wild, far from everything and everyone else. Finally, Timothy Treadwell makes his journey into the Alaskan wilderness for what he says is the protection of the bear population. His goal is to protect the bears from the middle of the paper by taking extreme measures. Henry David Thoreau, Chris McCandless, and Timothy Treadwell were three men who made the decision to go into the wilderness because they were unhappy with their current lifestyle. It was a huge risk and two of the men paid the ultimate price with their lives. There were better options for all three of them, without putting their lives in danger. Not everyone needs to go into nature for months to go beyond the limits. There is no point in doing anything other than what most people in the world do on a daily basis, because that is what has moved society forward for centuries. Professional athletes and presidents of the United States have all followed the same formula for success and arrived at their destination without problem. The traditional way of life is time-tested and there is nothing people cannot achieve by following it..
