Montaillou is a village, currently French, located in the south of the current department of Ariège, in the south of France. What sets this book apart from other writings on the same subject is that it focuses primarily on peasant wills from the 14th century. Before this book, there was a small amount of information available that was direct guidance from farmers. Ladurie does an amazing job providing the testimonies of peasants and shepherds, which helps the reader understand the lives of villagers in the 14th century. While offering an insight into the lives of the villagers, Ladurie covers many aspects of the time, such as the environment and authority, the great migrations, the mentality of the shepherds, but also more personal aspects such as the language bodily and sex, marriage, love and religion. in practice. Among the many aspects covered in this book, I will mainly focus my attention on the concept of marriage and love and observe its role in the 14th century in a village like Montaillou. In the introduction to the book we will learn a little more about the story. de Montaillou, then he informs the reader that the village was experiencing an inquisition since the village was teeming with Cathars. It is for this reason that Jacques Fournier, who was “bishop of Pamiers in Ariège in the Count of Foix (today southern France) from 1318 to 1325” (Ladurie vii). This section showed many different views and enlightened me that in each period different beliefs about religion and its practice and different interpretations of the same can be seen. As stated previously, another aspect of this book that I appreciate is that it allowed me to understand our studies on the Mediterranean and it was useful for me to see concrete examples and testimonies of individuals who experienced it.
