Essay / The Power of Voice - 1404
The Power of VoiceA person speaks and argues every day, but do you know that there is a real art to speaking and arguing? Created by orators and debaters long before today, the art of speech and debate has established itself in the life of American high schools and colleges. Before my first debate, I was nervous and shivering in fear of the outcome. However, I felt like I was part of something. With the judge looking at me and the stopwatch in hand, I began my first speech. Everything happened in a whirlwind and suddenly the judge ended the debate. It seemed like an eternity, but the judge finally gave my partner and me his vote. In fact, I had won! I couldn't believe it. This first debate inspired me to write my research article I on Discourse and Debate. What is speech and debate? Speech and debate is an academic sport that challenges its members and allows them to compete. Humorous and dramatic interpretations in the Public Forum Speech category and political debate in the Debate category, this activity allows its members to increase their critical thinking, their motivation and their commitment to their work. I want to see what really makes Speech and Debate unique? Which one is better?! What makes a speaker not also a debater, or vice versa? What are the advantages and disadvantages of debate and speech? By delving deeper into the very art of debate and speech, I will try to answer these same questions. What will I find? What will my conclusions be?The Speech and Debate Community has been operated by the National Forensics League, also called the National Speech and Debate Association, since 1925. It has so far enrolled more than 1.4 million high school and college students in the whole country. As a non-pro...... middle of paper...... great stuff, but it teaches you a lot about the world; such as history, current affairs and philosophy. Without debate, I would never have known that Frank B. Wilderson was a great figure in the fight against modern racism or that capitalism had so many flaws. Imagine how great it would be if everyone in the world knew how to speak publicly or debate controversial topics; like racism and capitalism (and not fighting all the time). I'm going off topic here, but Speech and Debate is a great community to be a part of, no matter who you are. At the end of this research, I can finally say that you can't just say that "talk is best" or "debate is better than anything!" ยป Whichever division of Speech and Debate you choose to join, remember one thing: you are part of a great community made up of some of the brightest minds America has to offer..
