  • Essay / School shootings should be committed by armed officers - 1127

Armed officers in schoolsThroughout their educational years, children go to school to receive an education, to spend time with friends, to obtain excise duties and many other things. America should have armed officers in public schools. Since children spend the majority of their time at school throughout the day and year, they should feel safe in this environment. That could soon change, as school safety lags behind the current surge in school shootings. School shootings have become more common in the United States, from elementary schools to middle schools. How should school systems address this problem? One solution that may prove most effective is having multiple armed officers in schools. Let's start with some major school shootings where armed officers were missing, when the resource officer was successful in stopping a potential shooting, and reasons why we should have an armed officer. One of the most telling school shootings took place on April 20, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado. Thirteen students were killed and twenty injured in broad daylight while attending Columbine High School. Two armed students opened fire just outside the building, then went inside and shot other students and faculty. This rampage lasts just under 45 minutes. The students then turned the weapons on themselves and ended their lives. The police did not show up in a timely manner, leading the families to file lawsuits against the police and the school. There was only one resource officer at the high school at that time. He was in the parking lot watching the kids come and go. One of the victims' parents said: "There was no one in that school that had a gun other than the two killers, and...... middle of paper..... . it’s “so secure your lane or pod, that’s how we do it” (Gumbrecht, Jamie). This may include having armed officers walk the halls, ensuring the school is safe from any danger that could potentially arise. Having armed officers in schools can help keep students safe and could potentially help stop mass shootings or reduce the number of casualties from shootings that do occur. Making schools safer should be an important topic to discuss because we want students to feel safe while studying. Schools should study shootings that were prevented. To make schools safer and almost worry-free, this has only caused more harm and leaves schools in a vulnerable state to any type of security risk. our youth is better than not having protection.
