  • Essay / Electronic Waste Management and Treatment - 1842

Introduction: One of the fastest growing solid wastes in the United States and around the world is used electronic equipment. With the daily development of electronic technology and its widespread use in industry, our daily life is becoming easier. The daily use of technological equipment such as cell phones, GPS, CRTs or even batteries has made our lives very dependent on the need for rapid growth in technology and new designs. These new designs and rapid growth are causing early obsolescence of electronic devices. Usually, excess electronic devices are mixed together and are called electronic waste by the EPA and some public environmental agencies. E-waste has become a major problem in many developed countries and has a huge environmental impact now and in the future. Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) are among the most difficult types of electronic waste to recycle. Regulations and laws regarding solid and hazardous waste are enforced under the supervision of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) (1). (Photo from Google Image) The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that nearly two percent of the solid waste stream in the United States is electronic waste (3). This may only represent a small percentage of the total solid waste stream at the moment, but the rapid growth of the electronics industry and the falling price of consumer electronics thanks to new technologies must be taken into account. counts for the future. This electronic waste represents a major percentage of the country's hazardous waste. Electronic devices contain many hazardous materials such as: Lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. Improper methods of handling discarded electronic devices can release hazardous chemicals that can harm human health and the environment. To control the problem of electronic waste, we should...... middle of paper ......V6CVJBznN597pGmy-qyw&sig2=xirrsdoXxgnoKwZv5ZO9oQ&bvm=bv.62922401,d.aWM3- ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT , SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT, COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL AND WASTE DIVISION, Electronic Waste Management Rules Proposed Amendments: NJAC 7:26-2.8(s), NJAC 7:26A-1.1 and 1.3 Proposed New Rules: NJAC 7:26A-13 Authorized by: Bob Martin, Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection4- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_waste5- http://www.prlog.org/ 11708649-5-stages-of-the-plastic-recycling-process.html6 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_recycling7- http://www.all-recycling-facts.com/glass-recycle. html8- http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/RecyclingMetal.php9-http://www.iowadnr.gov/Environment/LandStewardship/WasteManagement/Recycling/Ewaste/HazardsofEwaste.aspx
