The robot makes deals with other people to help them prolong their lives. Yossarian makes a deal with Colonel Cathcart and Colonel Korn that he can return home if he pretends to be friends with them only to find out that he has been used. Gilgamesh makes a deal with Utnapishtim to achieve immortality. Gilgamesh has to stay awake for a week to do this but he fails almost immediately. Their actions are justified by the fact that they constantly admit that they are afraid of dying. Gilgamesh admits his fear of dying and tried to do something to save himself. Yossarian admits he's afraid of dying, but because he says that people think he's crazy rather than just telling the truth and being crazy.
