  • Essay / The Maldives - 950

The Maldives: a group of islands off the coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. This tropical paradise sees thousands of tourists visit its shores every year. There's just one problem: the highest point in the Maldives is just six feet above sea level, meaning any rise in water levels would be a disaster for the 1,190 islands and their inhabitants. This is why, for the past decade, the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has worked vigorously in the fight against global warming while overcoming the tyranny of the previous government. Even though this could be the end of this beautiful country, Nasheed isn't giving up yet. The Maldives are located at 315 degrees north and 73 degrees east. They are found just off the coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. They are very flat and tropical with white sand beaches teeming with tourists. The total area is roughly the size of Washington DC. The region is very tropical and can be prone to monsoons from November to March. People mainly travel by boat from island to island and by bicycle on the islands. They do not have an industrial section due to lack of land. This means that they do not contribute too much to global warming. The Maldives' main industry comes from the tourist who visits the beautiful coastlines every year. Although today the Maldives is a magnificent paradise that welcomes more than 900,000 tourists a year, this was not always the case. peaceful. For almost 30 years, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, whom some called a dictator because of his uncontested elections that he won almost effortlessly, made his way in the Maldives. The prisons are a good example of how he abused his power. He would arrest anyone who opposed him. He tortured them until they died, then threw them away... middle of paper...... it started on climate change. Nasheed gave an inspiring speech to the people, telling them not to give up no matter what. The next day, negotiations for a deal began. It quickly became clear that it would not be easy to reach an agreement that would satisfy everyone. Despite their best efforts to negotiate a deal, China and India refused. The next day it was much the same, with China disagreeing. Finally, on the third day, the countries reached an agreement calling for, not demanding, a reduction in carbon emissions from all countries. This is a solid step forward in the fight against global warming. Nasheed continued to fight global warming until he was forced to resign by a group still loyal to Gayoom. Gayoom's brother has taken over and although the return to carbon neutrality is on hold, Nasheed will do everything he can to help the Maldives..
