  • Essay / The Importance of Social Media on Social Work - 709

Social media is used by my field agency for announcements, publicity for upcoming events or medical information, such as raising awareness of medical information as well as security (diseases). One of the ethical dilemmas that can arise from using social media arises when a customer searches for and sends a friend request or adds an employee on Facebook. Another ethical dilemma could arise when a client follows their worker on Twitter/Instagram. This could potentially harm workers' privacy because the customer might know more than they should, such as personal information, family photos, etc. On the other hand, it could hinder the helping process or the therapeutic relationship, especially if the worker does not explain to the client why he cannot be friends on social networks. The way I personally use social media is to be very professional online with my posts or conversations. Additionally, I tend not to post too much online and use the privacy options to ensure that people who aren't on my friends list can't see my posts.
