Essay / The Effects of Media Violence - 1089
Media violence appears to affect many children and young adults in our society and this should be of concern to parents. It seems that violence plays a role in many people's lives. Many innocent children are affected by the negative events that occur in the world we live in. Violence seen on television is often overlooked because television is usually a tool used to entertain children so that parents can have time for them and most of the time children are unsupervised. As a result, children can watch whatever they want and are often exposed to unnecessary violence. I believe this is a major problem that has a great effect on children and can eventually affect their lives. The effect of television violence and the effect of violent behavior are caused by video games in children. Most television channels try to protect themselves and deny their involvement in child violence. Unfortunately, there seems to be a correlation between the two and this may be one of the reasons why there is so much shocking violence in America. . Craig A. Anderson, professor of psychology at Iowa State University, conducted a study on the effect of violent video games on aggressive behavior in which he explains: "that exposure to video games violence increases physiological arousal and thoughts and feelings related to the aggression. Playing violent video games also decreases prosocial behavior. (Anderson). For example, over the past two years we have seen shootings and stabbings at schools and college campuses, as well as at movie theaters and shopping malls. Young people are born into a world where everything is in their hands where, photos, videos, messages, video games, rap songs, most of which...... middle of paper ...... Also, preview the programs before watching them with your child. Also a good idea is to plan a schedule to watch the program you liked with your family. This is not something that can be fixed in a day or two, it has to start with the parents, but it can be done.References:1. Anderson, California and Bushman, B.J. (2001).
