The Life You Save May Be Your Own is an interesting title due to the fact that he chose to save his own life and abandon a person he brought into the outside world. The entire story revolves around the character who never lived a life that involved him being connected to the world. He even tells Mrs. Crater that he has worked several types of jobs in the past and that the fact that he was only twenty-eight should have worried him. It was interesting to see how attached someone was to someone simply because of their desperation. Mr. Shiftlet felt pressured to marry Lucynell and did so to satisfy Mrs. Crater. At the end of the story, Mr. Shiftlet ended up running away from the girl he had just married, the only reason he did so was because he felt depressed for getting attached while 'he wasn't ready for this. The Life You Save May Be Your Own is an apt title, and even appears on the road Mr. Shiftlet is driving on; this fits in showing how he saved his own life by choosing his own destiny, leaving the girl to find her own destiny, and how life will never end as planned....
