    In June 1995, the United States Supreme Court passed a law allowing random testing of students involved in extracurricular or athletic activities. A 6-3 voting decision put the law into effect. In today's society, adolescents and young adults are victims of drug abuse and addiction. Young student-athletes find themselves dealing with low self-esteem, peer pressure, and anxiety. Student-athletes fill the void in their lives by illegally using drugs (including steroids) and alcohol. Should school officials have the power to randomly administer drug tests to student athletes? 94School policies require drug-free schools. Student-athletes are randomly tested for drugs in their bodies. Therefore, when random drug testing was first carried out in schools, it caused quite a ruckus. Some parents and students challenged the law, but without success. The law imposes ethical standards that respect and support the law. O'Connor argues that "testing randomly selected student-athletes for drugs without suspicion of wrongdoing violates their right to privacy" (O'Connor, Stevens, and Souter 1). Ultimately, in society, some people accept new laws and others do not. Statistically, drug test results have improved among student athletes. The Student Drug Testing Institute states: "Hunterdon Central Regional High School in New Jersey saw significant reductions in 20 of 28 drug use categories after 2 years of a drug testing program (e.g., drug use cocaine use among older adults fell from 13 percent to 4 percent). ยป (Student Drug Testing Institute). 144A good percentage of student athletes lack knowledge about the side effects of medications. Teachers, students and school administrators have noticed the strange way Lil Bobby acts during practices and in the classroom. Lil Bobby's teacher decides to visit his parents. The professor realizes that Lil Bobby's parents seemed to be on drugs. The teacher talked to Lil Bobby's parents about his behavior at school, and Lil Bobby's parents looked at the teacher and shrugged their shoulders. The teacher noticed that Lil Bobby exhibited some of the same characteristics as his parents. The next day, the teacher decided to seek help for Lil Bobby. Before Lil Bobby could get help, he overdosed on pills he found in his parents' bedroom. Lil Bobby almost died, thanks to her teacher who took the initiative to seek help when she noticed a change in the behavior of one of her students.
