Essay / Loss of innocence in lullabies for little criminals from...
Young adults lose the innocence of their childhood; replace it with the world of adulthood. The most recurring theme throughout the book Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill is the loss of innocence. The protagonist named Baby lives with her father, Jules, a heroin addict. Jules and Baby constantly move to different apartments in Montreal, where Baby is exposed to drugs, juvenile detention and forced into prostitution by his pimp. Baby faces many obstacles in her life at the age of thirteen because she does not have a father who loves her enough to guide her on the right path in life. So it didn't take long for Baby to lose his innocence. In society, many children are exposed to drugs at a young age, like Baby. Since Baby's father is a heroin addict, she would always experience Jules under the influence of drugs. Jules influenced Baby the most by exposing him to drugs that caused him to lose his childhood innocence. “I was very firm that I too would become an addict now. I also didn’t care what drug I was going to get addicted to” (O’Neill 72). Baby has no knowledge of drugs. She believes her knowledge of drugs came from her father and her father's friends; the majority of them were “drug addicts”. Jules' addiction eventually got worse and he began to free himself from his problems by abusing Baby; the relationship between her father and her becomes more distant. She thinks that if she tries heroin, she will be able to get closer to her father. At this stage, baby is very vulnerable because he is raising himself; her father is not there for her, which leaves baby with no choice but to abandon her innocence, due to the temptation of adults. The...... middle of paper ...... is to return to her childhood days, but she continues to ruin her life with situations she shouldn't be involved in. Throughout Baby's life, she experienced many instances where she lost her innocence. Baby is young enough to carry her dolls around in a vinyl suitcase, but old enough to experience the difficulties of the world more than she should. Baby and Jules have had a lot of unhappiness in their lives, and Baby's vulnerability contributes to his unhappiness, by being unable to differentiate between right and wrong, due to his desire to be loved; what Jules still didn't show him. There are many reasons why young adults feel the need to grow up quickly in the adult world, but ultimately it's not worth it. Childhood stage is neglected and it is the most important stage of life that young adults should cherish because you go through it only once..
