Community Assessment The geographic area known as Cherokee County, South Carolina covers 392.66 square miles of land (US Census Bureau, 2016). Cities and towns in Cherokee County include Gaffney, which is the county seat, and Blacksburg. Data obtained from City-Data.com (2012) reveals that Cherokee County is 61% rural and 39% urban. Demographic estimates given as of July 1, 2015 put the population at 56,194 inhabitants (US Census Bureau, 2016). According to the US Census (2016), demographic data for Cherokee County reveals the following: 6.3% of the population is under 5 years old, 23.9% is under 18 years old, 15.2% is 65 years old or more, women make up 51.5%, 76.5% are considered white, and 20.7% are black. Population estimates by education levels reveal that 77.1% have earned a high school diploma and 14.7% have a bachelor's degree or higher (US Census Bureau, 2016). Cherokee County's median income in 2014 was $34,766, but per capita income has been determined. $19,185 and 22.3% of the population lives in poverty (US Census Bureau, 2016). A visual assessment of downtown and urban areas reveals that a disproportionate number of homes are small and in disrepair. There are also a large number of mobile home parks and individual mobile homes in poor condition. There are well-kept neighborhoods and these are generally isolated from the main communities. There are two colleges in the county and a large shopping center and entertainment center. Members of this county can be seen frequently visiting common areas like Walmart, fast food establishments...... middle of paper...... identity analysis, dietitian advice on place and educational materials. I was also able to attend a heart health screening held at a local high school and this event was open to 11th and 12th grade students and teachers. The services provided during this session were similar to those listed above and also included body fat percentage measurements. This event was well received and attracted a lot of people since the students, with parental permission to attend, were able to leave classes. These events all raised awareness of the issues associated with obesity and presented ways to prevent obesity. Interviews and on-site visits to medical offices included a rehabilitation center, an outpatient dialysis clinic, a dental office, and an on-site visit to a men's shelter for free dental services by the above dental staff.
