Dialects, Idioms, Slang and Pronunciation of the American LanguageThere are hundreds of regional dialects within the same language. These dialects reflect the daily experience of people living in different regions of the country and shape their cultural identity. Someone from Pittsburgh has a very different voice than someone from Texas, and if they talk to each other, they'll have a good idea where the other is coming from. The type of English spoken in the United States is commonly called American English (Delaney). The various dialects are the result of historical, geographical and social factors. There is considerable linguistic diversity within each of the different dialect language communities, with individual speakers varying their speech. We all speak with an accent and we all speak a dialect, including standard English dialect and non-standard modern dialects. (Delaney) There are variations in accents depending on the age, gender, ethnicity, and social and educational background of the speaker. Dialect describes a variety of language in which the user's regional or social origin appears in a person's vocabulary and grammar usage. Much of dialect has to do with the native language a person speaks, where they are from, where they live, who they spend time with, and how they spend their free time. These are just a few ways the dialect has been influenced. We tend to be more open to ethnic diversity in our country, however, when it comes to academic writing, there is a language barrier. Students are not encouraged to write in their dialect of choice, but must use standard written English. The language varies by region as people have different access to middle of paper......where a person is from and what dialect they were raised to speak. Another example is the refrigerator. Some people call a refrigerator a refrigerator or an icebox. There are many other examples of words that can be pronounced and interpreted differently, it all depends on the region you live in and the customs of that region. Overall, the primary social function of any dialect or language is communication. Language plays a very vital role in human society. The language of any human society says a lot about that society. We can therefore emphasize that language and communication are inseparable. Dialect plays an extremely important role in our American culture and will continue to evolve and change over time. One thing is certain, we will always have a wide variety of dialects and speeches in our culture..
