I took care of her for two years like she was part of my family, with respect and compassion. In the last week of her life, Alice quickly regretted needing a hospice nurse to come and give her medicine and sing songs to her. Her son told me she was ready to leave, but she didn't want to let him go because he was still there. So one day he told me he had to go to the dry cleaners. I asked him not to go, but he told me not to worry. I was sitting next to Alice's bed, watching TV, and while she slept, breathing heavily, I held her hands and sang the song: "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine... ". I turned my head to look at the TV for a second and looked back at her, still holding her hands, and she wasn't breathing.
