    Hip-hop is meant to uplift and create, educate people on a broader level and bring about change. These words spoken by Doug E. Fresh describe the purpose of hip-hop culture in its entirety. This cultural movement was born in New York from African-American and Latin-American communities in the 1970s. This culture consists of DJing, break dancing, graffiti art and beat boxing. It has been and still is somewhat of a way for young people to express themselves in a positive way. Most classic hip-hop has a positive connotation and message to convey to the audience. It is heavily based on self-expression and overcoming negativity so that their voices can be heard. Although hip-hop culture is overall a constructive movement that engages young people in productive and self-satisfying activities, there are many misconceptions about it. It is a misunderstood culture that has much to offer our younger generations today and paves the way for more positive opportunities. Hip hop is a positive cultural movement that today's youth should know about and get involved in because of its effective results in keeping teens away from the streets and negative influences. Hip-hop is a form of self-expression that grew out of branching intercity communities. of New York City. This unique culture is based on five pillars. These pillars are DJing, Beat boxing, Break Dancing, Graffiti Art and Rap. Originally, the musical aspect of hip-hop culture was based on disc jockeys who looped breaks in songs to create a rhythmic beat which was later used as a front for rapping and beat boxing . Rap is made up of three parts; flow, content and delivery. These are usually topics that need to be proven once and for all in the middle of a paper...... the presto is about violence, drugs and money. The fallacy that children surrounded by these negative environments will inevitably be sent to prison must be proven. Hip hop is a positive cultural movement that today's youth should know about and get involved with because of its effective results in keeping teens away from the streets and negative influences. We must watch these children, listen to them and help them. We have the tools to do it, to offer this outlet to our young people. Help spread this positive message by creating workshops or X-blocks where children can experience what this rich culture has to offer them. And in the words of Russell Simmons: "The thing about hip-hop is that it comes from the underground, ideas that come from the underworld, from people who have mostly been excluded, who were not recognized.."
