In "Sonnet 24", from the Portuguese, Elizabeth Barrett Browning compares the negative attitudes of others to a "clinging knife" that she will shut simply to rid her love of danger and damage. In this particular sonnet, Elizabeth uses the Petrarchan sonnet form, which has two quatrains and two tercets. The figurative language presented in this sonnet includes its use of similes, metaphors, personification, and alliteration. This sonnet is in iambic pentameter and some of the sound devices used include alliteration and rhyme. The tone and mood of the sonnet is written with sincerity and depicts the feelings of security and comfort. Elizabeth's strategy resembles the metaphysical poet's use of a strange conceit when she compares the harshness of the world to a "knife that tightens arms."
