Individual care needs are vast and ever-changing. Each patient has their own set of experiences, backgrounds, values and beliefs that will affect their care needs. By understanding this concept, a nurse is able to understand how and why a patient was cared for and implement interventions in accordance with the patient's journey to ensure their return to daily life. They constitute the very foundations of nursing care and their importance must therefore be known. Therapeutic relationships and caring attributes are a strong theme in patients' health needs because they rely on the development of goal-directed relationships through communication on an emotional level. The development of therapeutic relationships and its importance to individual care needs will be explored in relation to the ANMC domain “Collaborative and Therapeutic Practice” and the “Effective Communication in Nursing” video. The themes of patient care, nurse and professional image and behavior, and health outcomes will further aid in understanding the impact of therapeutic relationships on meeting patient needs. The nurse is seen picking up her cell phone for a personal call midway through a health assessment and is also on Facebook while the patient expresses his concerns. These actions were unprofessional and from a legal perspective, the RN was not in compliance with ANMC Standard 9.2. This standard states that registered nurses must communicate effectively with patients to facilitate individualized care. Its importance for individual patient needs lies in research suggesting that lack of communication with patients is linked to decreased levels of patient compliance in their own care (Clickner and Shirey, 2013).
