Essay / Euthanasia: Dying with Dignity - 3332
Euthanasia: Dying with Dignity One day, a loved one may face difficult times or a terrible tragedy that leaves them in pain and agony for the rest of their life. his life. It might not happen today, tomorrow, or even next month, but it's always a good idea to have a well-thought-out plan. A terminal illness can strike at any time, like Lou Gehrig's disease, or a car accident can leave a person paralyzed and unhappy for the rest of their life. Allowing euthanasia would give people the right to die with dignity and give them the opportunity to avoid the pain, suffering and stressful effects of a terminal illness. The Hippocratic Oath was a major obstacle to legalizing the euthanasia process. Even though modern versions of the Hippocratic Oath are not the same as ancient versions of the oath, many doctors believe that euthanasia, as well as other things related to euthanasia, are against the oath. According to a 1993 survey of 150 American and Canadian doctors. In schools, for example, only fourteen percent of modern oaths prohibit euthanasia, eleven percent enter into an alliance with a deity, eight percent renounce abortion and barely three percent forbid any sexual contact with patients – all maxims held sacred in the classic version. (Tyson, 2014)This is proof that the Hippocratic Oath should not prevent euthanasia from being legalized in the United States. However, Dr. Jack Kevorkian decided that performing a type of euthanasia process called assisted suicide did not go against the Hippocratic Oath or any other related oath and that many more doctors should be able to follow in his footsteps.
