Essay / Reality of American farm workers: Crevecoeur...
Farm workers today receive a tiny percentage of the retail price of the crops they produce. Mentioned in an article by Tim Redmond, a survey of 120,000 migrant farm workers was conducted in 2008 by a demographer named Rick Mines. It found that a third of workers earned more than the minimum wage, a third reported earning exactly the minimum, and a third reported earning less than the minimum wage. Growers are potentially paying illegal wages and tens of thousands of farmworkers still face ongoing hardships that occurred more than 80 years ago.
