If used correctly, rubrics help teachers teach by avoiding confusion within the assignment, thereby helping students stay focused on the criteria and on how to achieve them. Rubrics also help coordinate teaching and assessment by making “the learning journey more coherent than a series of assignments with related but different criteria” (p. 8). With the use of rubrics helping teachers teach more effectively and coordinate homework instruction, it is only natural that by working together you will see an improvement in student learning. With effective rubrics showing students what is expected and how to achieve each level of criteria, students' knowledge will increase by understanding what they need to do.
