  • Essay / Characteristics of Humanism in Renaissance Art

Scholars of the time had benefited from the development of printing technology. With the invention of printing, books could be mass produced and reach a wide audience. An example of this would be Machiavelli's The Prince and Castiglione's The Courtier. Both books explained how people behave and how they should behave in a certain position. The books were an attempt to decipher the essence of human interaction, an approach to a familiar position and how to achieve it. The books were written with a humanist approach and are no longer limited to theological questions in relation to the Middle Ages. Another example of a well-known humanist scholar during this era was Michel de Montaigne. Michel de Montaigne is the author of a series of essays entitled L'Essai. It was the first form of essays and the essays covered a very wide variety of topics: philosophy, ideals and values. Montaigne's essays also mainly dealt with humanistic value and its importance. Although he did not reject religious belief, his essays focused on the actions of man and not on religious grounds.
