Essay / VoiceXML technology: advantages and limitations - 1132
VoiceXML is the W3C standard XML format for creating interactive voice applications accessible by telephone. It could be described as a markup language used to create scripts for interactive dialogues between humans and computers. It's like HTML, the only difference is that while HTML uses a graphical user interface to access information, VoiceXML uses an audio interface in which speech and keyboard tones replace the screen, keyboard and mouse ( Hampton, 2001, paragraph 1). The basic elements of interaction are speech and dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling with telephone keypads. The computer uses voice prompts to evoke the user's responses in a sequential and linear manner and the user is expected to respond using a finite set of vocabularies in each dialogue. Despite the potentials and capabilities of interactive voice applications, the technology is far from reaching its potentials. The reason for this problem is that they are prone to errors due to the lack of tools and methodology for building practical and suitable frameworks. In the past, voice application development was expensive high-level technology and complex application development which were designed with ad-hoc frameworks to meet core business needs, that's why people always think that it is very complex (Turunen, 2004). VoiceXML provides methods that make interactive voice applications fairly easy to create. It provides the opportunity to develop affordable, flexible, portable and easy-to-use voice applications. Its interest is that it reaches a much wider audience than the privileged population who have regular access to computers. The major advantages of VoiceXML mentioned, in order of regularity, are its simplified web access...... middle of paper ... ...Creating a VoiceXML application with Perl.
