The poem itself is a reflection of picturesque American life depicted in snapshots of patriotic songs and colloquialisms that are indicative of American life. These snapshots help to highlight where excessive patriotism begins and how overwhelming it can be. The poem begins almost as a preface to the real message Cummings is trying to convey. In the first four lines, in a sense, Cummings is trying to make sure the reader understands that he loves America. He wants readers to understand that this poem should not be misinterpreted as unpatriotic or anti-American. Cummings makes a very bold and powerful statement in the first line, placing America as, besides God, his primary love. By going this far, it can be assumed that what Cummings says next would cause the reader to question his loyalties....
